Peonies, Peonies, Peonies

It is hard to beat the spectacular beauty of peonies the first week of June. The fact that they come and go so quickly makes them all the more special - truly amazing every time. These lucky clients timed their daughter's baptism perfectly for fresh, local peonies!

A must for peony fanatics, a visit to Cricket Hill Garden in Thomaston, Conn. Visit them at www.treepeony.com. Below some herbaceous peonies thoughtfully shaded by umbrellas at Cricket Hill...

And you can eat it after the party...

A preview of a little something I'm brewing up for a 40th birthday extravaganza tomorrow night...Steel cut oatmeal tins (which I ate this morning!) with andromeda, eastern hemlock (not the poisonous one), radishes, onions, small pears, lilies and rose hips. I like how this is holiday festive (the radishes and onions almost look like ornaments) but not christmasy, which everything tends to be this time of year.

Say goodbye...

Made with the final bit of flowers left lingering in my garden, this wild, rustic bouquet marks the end of one of the finest flower seasons of all (autumn) and the beginning of a long, cold wait until spring. Sad but always exciting to see what we can come up with during the dark days of winter. In this fall mix: anemone centers, echinacea, wild aster, hydrangea leaves, sweet autumn clematis vine, achillea, and artemesia in antique blue ball jar).
